International Communication an der Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen Groningen in den Niederlanden studieren

Informationen über den Studiengang

The major in International Communication was created a number of years ago specifically for those of you wishing to pursue an international career as a communication professional. It is taught in English from an intercultural perspective and you will be trained to become the intercultural mediator among communication specialists. Your studies in international and intercultural communication will prepare you for an international career.

Graduates fulfil positions as international communication manager, public relations officer, international marketing and communications manager, event manager or publicity manager. After graduation you will have a broad understanding of international communication and the basic skills needed for a starting position in a wide range of international careers.

First two years

During the first two years, the programme focuses on the core subjects important for everyone pursuing a degree in communication: communication theory and planning, social psychology, media theory and skills, management, marketing, international law, communication research and economics. The three main subjects, however, are English language, intercultural competence (Communication) and Communication theory.

The first two years are divided into eight periods of ten weeks. Each ten-week term includes a project that focuses on a theme and results in a professional product. You are presented with a problem to solve and work on in international project groups. The subjects offered during the term provide you with the theoretical and practical tools you need in order to complete the project successfully.

Third year

In the third year you will do a five month internship abroad. You may choose a country outside your home country. The internship will provide you with hands on experience in an international company or organisation where you can learn the tricks of the trade from professionals in the field.

During the second part of your third year, you will study at one of our partner schools as an exchange student. This is your elective period, therefore you may choose which subjects you wish to study. Some students prefer to do a minor for example in psychology or international business, its up to you! Foreign students have the opportunity to stay at Hanze University to take classes.

Final year

The fourth and final year is devoted to international communication from a strategic perspective. The first semester embodies the preparatory semester for the final paper you will write during your second semester. Projects and case studies will demonstrate the breadth of contemporary communication practice and the increasing importance of communication in both public and private sector organizations world-wide. Subjects include communication theory, facilitating skills (advising and negotiating skills), ethics, scenario planning and debate. One of the main tasks for you to fulfill is to try and come up with strategies to ‘reconcile cultural dilemmas’. As a research intern, you will write your final paper describing and analysing a communication problem of an international organisation and advising the management.
