European Studies an der University of Twente Enschede in den Niederlanden studieren
Informationen über den Studiengang
Bachelor: 3 Jahre
Master: 1 Jahr bzw. 1,5 Jahre
What is European Studies?
Brussels is exerting increasing influence, from the quality requirements for the items in your shopping basket to tackling human trafficking, numerous European environmental rules, commercial treaties with other economic power blocks and the European arrest warrant. Consequently, more and more policy makers are recognizing the importance of having a thorough knowledge of European integration, which has led to an increasing need for specialists in this field. The current 27 EU member states no longer just concern themselves with decisions regarding matters of security, economy, agriculture and technology. As a result, many developments can no longer be explained in a national context alone. Knowledge of the most important basic principles of European integration has become essential in a growing number of fields. Having this knowledge will put you at an increasingly important advantage as European integration forges or professional ahead.
In European Studies (the international specialization of Public Administration) you will focus on current European developments and the role that the European Union plays. Using current issues as a starting point, you will learn to look beyond borders and develop solutions that take a variety of interests into consideration. You will study these processes in three central themes: the governance of Europe, European integration and globalization. You will deal with these themes on the basis of different disciplines (law, economics, political science and sociology). In other words, we use core historical disciplines but we apply them to the very latest developments. Complete the programme in European Studies and the world is your oyster. Ready for the journey?
European Studies is a 3-year Bachelor’s programme which takes a broader and more in depth look at the European Union. You will study the process of European integration in all its aspects. Nobody disputes the fact that Europe is becoming increasingly important. However, this same complexity also means that in order to produce solutions to the many issues concerning the Union, we will need to examine Europe from various different angles.
This is why the European Studies programme focuses not only on Brussels, but also takes a look at the impact of European politics on the individual member states and international politics, putting the development and discussion of European integration centre stage. We will concentrate, for example, on topics such as the expansion of the European Union, the differences in national health care systems, foreign policy, homeland security and asylum policies, trade, and European environmental issues.
The courses' language
The Bachelor’s programme is taught in English and all course material is in English. This takes a bit of adjustment in the beginning, but students find they soon get used to it. Moreover, choosing to follow an international programme has its advantages: not only will you learn to speak fluent English, you will also learn to communicate with people of different nationalities from diverse cultural backgrounds. This will be a great springboard for your future national or international career. Whether you choose to work for the government, enter the business world or go into European politics, exciting prospects await you.
The Bachelor’s programme
The first year is an introduction year where you will familiarize yourself with the fundamental principles of economics, law, sociology and political science. Using these disciplines, you will also learn how to formulate answers to questions regarding the rising profile of the European Union. Aside from attending lectures where the topics will be discussed in broad terms, the programme has been set up in such a way as to provide students plenty of opportunities to actively participate in workgroups, and to take the initiative in assignments and projects. Students will work together on the projects to solve policy issues using the knowledge they have gained during the course. One of the projects, for example, involves a negotiation simulation where students take on the role of members of the European Union in negotiating a decision. It is during these sorts of exercises that you will gain firsthand experience of working with cultural differences.

You will take a close look at development aid, human rights, security and international trade. Your study of these areas will not be restricted to the EU alone; you will also examine other international organizations such as the UN, NATO and the WTO.
The third year
In your third year, you will specialize in one of the programme’s key disciplines – economics, law, political science or sociology – or in one of the EU-related topics, such as asylum policy, terrorism or the environment. There are also opportunities for you to expand your knowledge by taking a minor, following a programme at a foreign university or through your choice of Bachelor’s project. Choosing a programme at a foreign university gives you the opportunity to take a number of subjects, as is the case at the Charles University in Prague, or to choose a relevant portfolio of subjects.
The Bachelor’s Project
Topical issues are often chosen for the Bachelor’s project, issues which are at the heart of the discussion on the future of Europe. For example, research into the parliamentary control of the EU’s foreign and security policies, the role of the EU in international environmental policy, or the fight against terrorism. Are you interested in a particular ethnic community? You could, for example, carry out research into the views of the Assyrian community in the Netherlands and Sweden. Another option would be Turkey’s entry into the EU. You can also link your project to any current research being carried out by one of our lecturers, or tie it in with a work placement where you will already being gaining professional experience. The Bachelor’s project completes your Bachelor in European Studies. You will be awarded the degree „Bachelor of Science (BSc)“ in Public Administration.
The Master’s Programme
Once you have obtained your Bachelor’s degree you are ready to enter the job market, but you could also continue your studies with the Master in European Studies, the Master in Public Administration or the Research Master “Governance of Knowledge and Innovation”. All our Masters are taught in English and students are required to write a final thesis. Once you have completed the programme, you will be awarded the title of “Master of Science (MSc)”.
European Studies
The Master’s in European Studies is devised as a follow-up programme to the Bachelor’s in European Studies, but is also open to students who have completed other relevant Bachelor’s programmes. You can choose between the 1-year programme and the 1,5-programme. If you choose the one year Master’s, you will take all your subjects at Twente and will be awarded a Dutch degree. The 1,5-year Master’s is a programme that we have set up together with the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. This programme is a European project with a difference: two universities collaborating on a Master’s programme which leads to a Dutch and a German degree qualification (a double degree), which means you walk away with a Dutch and a German title in one! The ideal business card that not only provides you with greater opportunities within the Dutch and German job markets, but is also your fasttrack ticket to the wider European job market.
